M. Michael Shabot, M.D. is Executive Vice President and System Chief Clinical Officer for the Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, Texas, which includes 15 hospitals, 20 ambulatory surgical centers, 9 convenient care centers and 240 other ambulatory sites. Memorial Hermann has private and employed medical groups totaling 4,000 physicians, an Accountable Care Organization and a primary care residency. In each of the years 2013, 2014 and 2015, Memorial Hermann’s ACO generated the highest savings the CMS Medicare Shared Savings Program has ever recorded, totaling $200M.
Under his leadership, in 2013 Memorial Hermann received the John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality at the National Level, presented by the Joint Commission and National Quality Forum. Thomson Reuters rated Memorial Hermann one of the top 5 large US healthcare systems in 2012 and 2013. In 2012 the system received the Texas Hospital Association’s Bill Aston Quality Award for its high reliability program. In 2009 Memorial Hermann received the National Quality Healthcare Award from the National Quality Forum as well as the National Patient Safety Leadership Award from the VHA Foundation and National Business Group on Health. The book Integrating Quality and Strategy in Health Care Organizations, coauthored by Dr. Shabot, was published in August 2012. Dr. Shabot is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas at Houston in the Schools of Biomedical Informatics and Public Health. He serves on the Board Quality Committee of the Mercy System, based in St. Louis, MO.
Dr. Shabot is Board certified in General Surgery and Surgery Critical Care, with specialties in general surgery, trauma surgery and critical care. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Medical Informatics. Prior to joining Memorial Hermann, Dr. Shabot served as Medical Director of Enterprise Information Services, Director of Surgical Intensive Care and Associate Director of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. He is a past Chief of Staff at Cedars-Sinai. He served as President of the Los Angeles Surgical Society and the Southern California Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
During his surgical residency, Dr. Shabot implemented a first generation electronic medical record system for the real time management of critically ill ICU patients. Since then he has overseen the development of numerous innovations in patient care including ICU, inpatient and ambulatory systems. He has published over 350 papers, chapters, books and abstracts on critical care, trauma, physiologic monitoring, computerized information systems and quality management. Dr. Shabot conducts research on how systems can provide high reliability patient care, quality and safety. He obtained a patent on a wireless clinical alerting system in 1999.
Dr. Shabot is married to Linda Ann Shabot and they have three children in California and Texas.
