Personality as a Predictor of Job Satisfaction: Study of the Relationship between Personality and Job Satisfaction amongst Workers in The Bahamas

Lavanda Cleare

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between personality and job satisfaction amongst workers in The Bahamas. A self-administered survey was conducted comprising of a representative sample of 384 employed individuals on New Providence. It was hypothesized that all four core self-evaluation traits – self-esteem, generalized self-efficacy, emotional stability, and internal locus of control –would be positively related to satisfaction with overall job, and 13 jobfacets. The study found that all traits were positively related to job satisfaction. However, just two traits (emotional stability and internal locusof control) were positively related to all job facets. Mean correlations were .03 self-esteem, .22 generalized self-efficacy, .30 emotional stability, and .34 internal locus of control. The correlation for the four traits combined was even more significant (r = .46). Traits, individually and collectively, explained a very small proportion of the variance in satisfaction. Overall, results suggested that whilst significant positive relationships existed, personality was not a substantial predictor of job satisfaction.
